Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN - Evaluation

Module Title Design: Design Practice

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The skills I have learnt in this module is to focus on working to create pieces of work at a professional level and of high standard to compliment my portfolio. I have also focused on my audience and getting my message across by thinking outside of the box and using the skills that I feel confident with. Throughout this year I have come to see what I feel that I want to do and focus on what I feel I am good at which is using shape, pattern, colour, typography with advertising and promotion this has become a big interest to me and I find that I tend to be looking at this theme more and becoming more inspired by.

I have improved on my organisation and planning of work that needs to be done for the week. I’ve also documented my work with every improvements and changes I have made and also photographing my products into context. For this module research was a big part of it and getting other peoples opinions so this was a big focus to organise and document this well to help with idea generation ideas.

I have also taken more care in my presentation skills such as working on photographing my final products to a better and high quality. The presentation boards have really helped to layout my work appropriately and to show my work off at its best.

Throughout this module It has really helped to receive feedback off my piers and taking their advice on my work as well as the tutors advice its been good to get a range of opinions to help develop and progress with my work.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

I have experimented a lot with colour, shape, layout, photography it has helped to show my improvements and to see what design is effective for my audience it also helps show the weaknesses and strengths in my designs. Regular crits and talking to piers about my designs have helped by getting good feedback and more focus on what I need to improve or carry on with.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths in the briefs I think are my documentation, and research. These you see by my annotations and ongoing development design showing improvements along the process. My designs created on a computer has improved a lot more and I have been using it a lot more with more confidence then I did before and it has helped with my work to create it more visual. I think I have also found a pathway that I am confident and good at and what to carry on developing this, which is pattern, colour and shape. I have also wanted to think beyond my ideas this has been shown in my Metro brief my taking an idea and broadening it.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

My weaknesses lie in time management but in a way I do think it has improved, I have been on top of my work but there’s always the point where you go back to parts of the brief and try and expand on it, which I need to stay away from I need to think once its done its done so I carry on and plan time for my other briefs. This will be essential for my FMP.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

What I would do differently next time would be to be more certain on my chosen briefs and take them in the direction of what I want to do with it and what I am confident in doing and how I want to see it in my portfolio. Also I would want to work on a better time plan for my briefs so I have an even amount of development and research work.

6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance 5
Punctuality 4
Motivation 3
Commitment 4
Quantity of work produced 3
Quality of work produced 4
Contribution to the group 4

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
